Becoming a foster parent in Montana means providing a safe, supportive home to a child who needs one. CPR and first-aid training is part of what foster caregivers are expected to complete, and agencies commonly require current certification. It is one condition within the licensing and pre-service training process.

The first-aid requirement

In Montana, youth foster home licensing (ARM 37.51) requires pre-service training before a license is issued and ongoing annual training thereafter, administered by the Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS), Child and Family Services Division. CPR and first-aid certification is commonly required of foster caregivers by licensing agencies, with hands-on CPR and pediatric first aid expected.

Where required, the certification must be kept current and is one condition in addition to the home study and the parenting suitability assessed during licensing. Completing it does not by itself qualify a person to foster.

How to meet it

A recognized, up-to-date first-aid and CPR certificate meets this requirement. It is in addition to the required training or assessment, and is renewed periodically.
